About
Hayeon Shim 심하연
Hayeon Shim is a Korean media artist and experience director whose practice expands theatrical dramaturgy into AI, XR, and immersive spatial media.
Shim holds a BA in Theatre (Directing) from Chung-Ang University. She is currently a Creative Project Manager at Dotmill, a premier art-tech company, and concurrently serves as a Coordinator for the Korea Art Directors' Association (KADA). Her past roles include Curator for the New Media Art Research Association (NMARA), and she participated in the Arts Council Korea APE CAMP in 2025 and 2026.
Her practice begins with the act of invitation. Rather than positioning audiences as passive observers, Shim constructs worlds of all-encompassing immersion that allow them to walk inside the narrative and become participants. This vision is the core of her thesis: the Director-as-Architect — the invisible architecture of theatrical dramaturgy (the design of gaze, rhythm, and flow) expanded into the language of new technologies like AI, XR, and spatial audio. Her ultimate goal is to build a creative lab that fuses these elements to research and create participatory worlds.
Her professional capabilities are proven through hands-on development of large-scale public and commercial projects. As a Creative PM at Dotmill, Shim led the ₩2B Tongjeyoung: Light of Peace project as its Content PM and Performance Director, engaging over 130,000 visitors, and is a key planner for ongoing ₩5B+ projects. In performance, she adapted and directed A Midsummer Night's Dream as an immersive musical, and her production Once Upon A Time won Best Stage Performance at the WTEA International Theatre Festival on its international tour. Her AI art project If You Listen: RESONANCE BEYOND won the Excellence Award at the SNU AI Art Hackathon and was presented at an international conference. Commercially, she arranged and directed the Miss Korea stage for the KBS broadcast The Ddanddara, earning a perfect score from JYP and a re-staging at the APEC Music Festa.
She is a co-author of the 2023 ATEC Conference Report, founded the interdisciplinary immersive research community Ready To Play, and designed and instructed Dotmill's internal AI art workshop for creative professionals — continuing her work to bridge academia and industry.
